Furniture Care Basics

  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Avoid placing furniture next to the window
  • Avoid direct contact with the heating or A/C unit
  • Clean any spills immediately
  • Always use coasters, placemats and tablecloths
  • Always move the items by lifting rather than sliding on the surface of the furniture
  • Move the accessories on top of the furniture periodically
  • Avoid long term use of plastic or rubber items on top of the furniture
  • Dust and polish the furniture every 4 to 6 months

Wooden Furniture Care Products

There are various products specifically designed for furniture care. The three major categories are polishes, waxes and oil treatments. The choice will be based on the amount of use and the climate condition. Each products have their pros and cons depends on the situation

Furniture Waxes

The furniture waxes provides the longest protection for your furniture finishes. They are available as paste or liquid. Some waxes are colored to cover up minor scratches and other surface blemishes.

Paste wax is better for the wooden furniture with polished wood finish. Liquid or spray wax are better for antique furniture with polished finish.

Oils

Oils are better for oiled wood finish. Oiled wood have pores like skin that absorbs the oil into the wood, and oils will be the best protectant. Wax will block the pore and causing the wood to dry and crack.

Furniture Cleaners

Furniture cleaners and dusting products will protect the furniture finish and should be used regularly. However, some products might not be suitable for your furniture. Always read the description.

Upholstery Cleaning Codes

S: Clean the fabric sparingly with a water free cleaning solvent.

W: Clean fabric with a water based solution.

WS: Depending on stain, water based solution, dry-cleaning solvent or upholstery shampoo are all acceptable.

X: Fabric should be professionally cleaned only. Vacuum and brush if needed. No solvent or solution should be used.
